What, was I not supposed to pay tribute simultaneously to Cameron Mitchell'due south altogether and Noirvember by watching a pornographic murder mystery in which Mitchell has a not-sex office as a cop?
Vinegar Syndrome comes through with yet another fascinating feature, this time in the form of Dixie Ray: Hollywood Star, as well known as It's Chosen "Murder," Baby. Produced by Chris Warfield (more than on him here) and directed past Anthony Spinelli (aka Sam Weston, or as I've pointed out in multiple reviews already, Golden Globe-nominated thespian Jack Weston'southward blood brother), this 1943-set detective story is evidently molded after such neo-noirs as Chinatown and Farewell, My Lovely. Mitchell and B-movie stalwart John F. Goff (he had credited roles in The Witch Who Came…

It'south Called Murder, Babe is the r-rated cut of the 30-feature Dixie Ray: Hollywood Star. I watched the latter because I thought it was the main version. But having fast-forwarded through the r-cut, I'one thousand non so sure anymore. Funny thing is that the producers somehow tricked Cameron Mitchell into doing this movie. According to IMDb Mitchell didn't know that a hardcore cut was fabricated simultaneously. Oh yeah, gotta love the early on 80s.
It's a neo-noir, set in 1943. The set and costumes are all authentic. They even tried to copy the 40s-manner cinematography. Particularly the opening shot was definitely inspired by Hitchcock. It's too the best shot in the film. John Leslie plays a private detective, just similar he did…

Third time's the amuse. (Though, in truth, I've only watched it twice.)
I'm glad I watched the R-rated cut — IT'S CALLED MURDER, Babe — first. It proved to me once and for all that adult film manager Anthony Spinelli, forth with his cast and crew of developed film industry regulars, were eminently capable of making compelling, entertaining, idea-provoking, narratively challenging Not-adult picture palace.
I already knew this, having watched both the developed and non-adult films of Roberta Findlay, Roger Watkins, Jean Rollin, etc., but seeing It'S CALLED MURDER, BABY just put that myth (that adult films cannot also exist *real* cinema) the rest of the manner to bed.
As a retro-noir fabricated in 1983, then, this R-rated cut trades not…

I watched the R-Rated version 'It's Called Murder, Infant' of the X Rated 'Dixie Ray, Hollywood Star' because after reading some reviews this seems to be the superior 1 and I did feel similar this was a very round picture without anything missing. I will watch the adult version somewhen in comparison.
I actually enjoyed this movie as both proof of how talented some of the directors and actors working in the Golden Age of adult movies were and truthfully as one of the best Noirs of the 80s (at least in terms of actual period pieces, non Neo Noirs). As a menses piece this was truly impressive in how much effort was put in flawless period wardrobe, locations, set… -
I never article of clothing panties. They exit marks.
A. Spinelli #iv.v --- I've already watched the xxx-cut Dixie Ray: Hollywood Star some time agone. It'south called Murder, Baby removes all the hc-action and has some additional scenes edited in. Besides the naughty dialogue, you wouldn't normally think that this was originally an adult moving picture. Information technology'southward really well made and the cinematography, story, and acting are very good. It's funny too. Lisa De Leeuw and John Leslie are bang-up in the pb roles. And one cannot forget the i and only Cameron Mitchell.

This review may comprise spoilers. I tin can handle the truth.

It's Called Murder, Baby is the R-rated recut of Dixie Ray Hollywood Star — both versions are bachelor on the DVD release from Vinegar Syndrome. I watched the hardcore version, and wow! Classic porn doesn't go much classier than this! Professionally shot with non a single out of focus shot in sight, solid performances (especially from John Leslie and the insanely sultry Lisa De Leeuw), sex scenes that work within the narrative, and a decent enough story! In many ways, Dixie Ray Hollywood Star makes for somewhat depressing viewing. Outside of a few oddities, information technology was by and large downhill for the world of hardcore from this point on.

I oasis't seen the X version of this, but information technology'due south surprising simply how well Spinelli covers his tracks, only telegraphing where he originally meant for the action to go just a couple of times.
There's something deeply strange (but also not??) about seeing Cameron Mitchell acting opposite John Leslie.

I haven't seen the X-rated version notwithstanding. The R-rated cut works surprisingly well as a depression-budget detective thriller (although with an extremely large upkeep for a porn).
The soundtrack takes cues from Chinatown and classes upwards the product forth with the vintage cars, sharp dress, and radio broadcasts from 1943. You won't get any sweeping street scenes total of period detail, just you volition go a couple of extras dressed as a crewman and his daughter strolling by. There's a lot of menstruum specificity in the dialogue, besides; rationing of gas and nutrient, the U.s. taking Guadalcanal. And there's an actual story, non just sexual practice setups. Information technology'due south about a blackmail scheme, some nude photos of a fading Hollywood starlet, and…

An adult pic with all the porno removed and it features Cameron Mitchell? No. No thank you. No.

From The Archive
Shockingly well-made noir tribute held back from greatness by a plot that is nearly incomprehensible for the offset two acts. Still worth a lookout man but be prepared for confusion. I will watch the uncut version at some bespeak.
58/100. Watched on Vinegar Syndrome DVD (Laptop; Hard disk).
